SOLUTION F has been involved in engine development since 1986.

SOLUTION F build their image working with the 2 major French Automotive companies RENAULT and PEUGEOT for production and race engines.

The main engine development examples are :

    * All the road race engines sold by PEUGEOT SPORT Boutique since 1988.The most famous is the 1.6 litre 16 valves 225 HP engine for the 106 Maxi.

    * The MERCEDES 3.2 litre for the PARIS DAKAR SSANGYONG MUSSO T2.

    * The development of V6 3.0 litre 290 HP race engine and building of 150 engines for the RENAULT Clio V6.

    * The production 2.0 litre 172 HP engine for the RENAULT Clio RS.

Etc…

SOLUTION F have won several French Rally Championships in their class, and the female World Rally Championship with a CITROEN in 1993. In 1998, we finished 2nd in British Rally Championship with SEAT.

After winning the KYALAMI 1998 race with our V8 5.0 litre engine, we started a V8 6.0 litre engine development program in 1999 for sport car races and Le Mans.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Among the different possible engine basis for Endurance and Sport cars program, SOLUTION F chose a V8 2 valves per cylinder engine configuration for financial and technical reasons :

    - Production costs : the maximum price of an engine on the market of Sports Racing World Cup is 180 000 US $. With such an engine configuration we can be less expensive.

    - Maintenance costs : for the same reasons the maintenance is much cheaper.

    - Performances : the imposed size of restrictors for 2 valves per cylinder engines allows the same level of power as 4 valves per cylinder or turbo-charged engines with their restrictors.

The torque will be higher : this can compensate a weight increase and is adapted to the use of long gear ratios in Le Mans Race.

    - Reliability : the simplicity of this engine configuration is really favorable concerning engine reliability for endurance races.

V8 TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The SOLUTION F V8 6.0 L engine can be delivered in 2 versions, for Endurance or Sprint applications.
The specifications of the 2 versions are close to keep the price at a reasonable level.

The main characteristics are :
            -     V8, 2 valves per cylinder, 6.0 L engine, based on an aluminium block
            -     High block with long rods for the reliability in the endurance version
            -     Titanium valves and spring retainers
            -     Magnesium intake manifold with 8 throttle plates and carbon air box
            -     Dry oil sump, machined for increased block rigidity
            -     Oil pump connected to the sump by rigid pipes for reliability, also easy to replace with the engine in the chassis
            -     Two part removable water pump, easy to replace in the chassis
            -     Sequential electronic fuel injection system
            -     The weight of the complete engine with its airbox is :
                            ·    192 kg in Endurance Version
                            ·    173 kg in Sprint Version
            -     Reliability :
                            ·    5500 km in Endurance Version
                            ·    1500 km in Sprint Version

ENGINE INSTALLATION

The SOLUTION F V8 6.0 L engine has the advantage of keeping a reasonable size even with its large displacement.

This engine has already been fitted in Lola and Riley & Scott Chassis. It will also be possible to fit it in future Reynard and SNBE Chassis.

The main dimensions of the standard Endurance Version of the SOLUTION F V8 6.0_L engine are shown below (in millimetres) :

PERFORMANCE LEVEL

ENDURANCE Version (with 2 i35 mm restrictors in Le Mans version) :

SPRINT Version (with 2 i 34,65 mm restrictors for Sport Racing World Cup) :

ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The main electronics characteristics are :

   -     High performance Electronic Control Unit from MAGNETI MARELLI with diagnostic and engine survey
   -     High quality miniature sensors for the reliability
   -     Open system with the possibility to exchange information :

            *   from the car : power shift of the gearbox, external temperature, lambda sensor, etc...
            *   to the pilot (dashboard, and acquisition link with a CAN line) for some important parameters : shift light, fuel consumption...

Planned evolutions for Season 2000

   -     Oil pump directly bolted on the sump without any external pipe :
                  ·        increased reliability
                  ·        easy to replace with the engine in the chassis

   -    Weight reduction of the complete engines

   -    Complete re-definition of air intake system :
                  ·       Power output increase
                  ·       Size reduction

This will be designed in collaboration with our customers, to optimise the installation in the Chassis.
